Research Insight

The dialysis procedure is a clinically complex system with the dialysis machine at the core of the workflow. User research of the system led us to understand that there are multiple users with varied needs. The key users were the clinical staff, product maintenance staff and the patient.

For the clinical staff, accuracy, safety, ease of setting up the procedure, ability to monitor multiple patients together, prominent alerts in case of criticality etc., were some key concerns. For the maintenance staff, servicing the subsystems of the device needed to be a hassle free activity. For the patient, it is a long, often painful experience with the the procedure and the device.

Satisfying differing needs of users in one solution to provide an enhanced experience, proved to be a challenge.

Design Response

The design has a clean, minimal, approachable ‘buddy’ like form, to make it seem nonintimidating for the patients. It has an intuitive interface for the clinical staff. It packs the complex hydraulics functionality in a modular build.

The extracorporeal unit was designed to help nurses to set up the procedure quickly, monitor multiple machines from a distance, provide immediate access to all the features and enable faster troubleshooting. Ergonomic handles at the back allow for moving the device within the premises.

The overall dimensions have been defined keeping in mind the space constraints in hospitals and dialysis centres, also allowing the patient to be connected on either side of the machine. The connected platform ensures that the vital statistics during dialysis are monitored remotely as needed by qualified nephrologists.
