Helping realize a simple diagnostic tool for eye-care to benefit rural poor.

THE BACKGROUND

The lack of availability of highly skilled Ophthalmologists and the expensive nature of diagnostic screening devices (one for every problem) was making diagnosing and treating eye-related problems highly prohibitive, particularly in the rural parts of India. The cumbersome process and the number of steps involved in screening patients for eye disorders further compounded this.

THE OPPORTUNITY

These would now become a thing of the past with the development of a portable, intelligent, non-invasive, non-mydriatic eye pre-screening technology. It could detect 5 major ailments of the eye –Diabetic Retina, Cataract, Glaucoma, Cornea and Refraction problems that constitute 90% of blindness. All that was required was to make sure of the intuitiveness and usability of the concept.

DISCOVERY

Our extensive fieldwork to understand how the product would be used in the critical milieu of a rural eye-care centre brought us face-to-face with the problems related to its use. Technicians with no medical background would use the equipment. Besides they would need to be trained in its use in just two weeks! Our problem solution—Design a product that was as simple to use as a still camera!

CREATION

With this brief in mind we set about designing a low-cost product with minimal operating costs & maintenance, simple functionality (a single click button) and no disposable parts. This would be in perfect resonance with the simplicity of the technology that provided an automated and reliable report of the problem of the patient’s eye after taking its readings. Part of the challenge lay in that of coordinating between 4 agencies, geographically spread out, that were involved in making the product a reality—from optics to technology development to manufacturing.
